"Cream Of The Crop" is your newest output and was released early April 2020. What has changed since "Greatest Hits Vol.2"?

“Cream of the crop” is our newest album. The only line up change was one that took some time before settling down. Jasper who played the drums on “greatest hits...” left the band and was replaced by our longtime friend and awesome drummer Youri. We played some great shows with him but unfortunately he couldn’t find enough time to stay with us. So after he drummed on COTC he quit and we played a bunch of shows with another good friend and great drummer Yannick. But since he is a professional drummer in a few bands he also couldn’t stay with the band permanently. Lucky for us he knows almost every drummer in our area and he brought us in contact with a young guy called Lenno van Galen who is also an awesome drummer and a cool dude to have in the band. We hope he will stick around!!!

Apart from that no great changes were made. We recorded again with Igor Wouters because he knows us inside out and is perfectly able to catch the sound we are looking for. He is such a fucking great and talented producer, we never want to work with anyone else! We never record in a studio. He just brings his equipment to wherever we can find a space and record. Sometimes it’s in our rehearsalroom, but sometimes also just in someone’s basement.

Actually the whole world seems to go insane about the Corona situation. Hope you guys are alright?! Does this situation affect you guys right now? Any shows / tours cancelled? Are you afraid of whats coming up regarding the virus? And wow about the situation in the Netherlands?

The coronavirus fucked up a few gigs we were really goddamn looking forward to! We were supposed to do three shows in Spain with our buddies from Lion’s Law, but they were cancelled obviously. I hope the coronavirus dies of aids, fucking party spoiler. And we were supposed to play with The Exploited in Belgium, but that also went down the shittube. Fortunately we and our families and friends are doing fine. I hope you all are doing fine as well.

Staying home, Lockdown - How do you spend your “free” time? Any recommendations for boring weekends? Are you playing Playstation or similar (which games?), do you have some Netflix / Amazon Prime / Disney+ recommendations? What are your top 3 movies ever? Some Young Ones songs are about MILFs and pornstars, let me know your top 3 pornstars of all time!

I don’t think any bandmembers play videogames. We do watch a lot of Netflix. There are so many cool series on there, I don’t know where to begin. Personally I really like almost all Scandinavian thriller series, but also Better call Saul, Ozark, Tiger King was also a great documentary. Movies you should definitely watch: Lock, stock and two smoking barrels, Pulp Fiction and Trainspotting. As for pornstars: Why a top 3? Gianna Michaels. If you want a top 3, then Gianna would be on 1, 2 and 3.

The Young Ones often will get compared to the Cockney Rejects. Are the Rejects your main influence? Name your top 5 records of all time in Oi! & Punk and your top 3 records beside those genres?

Cockney Rejects are definitely our biggest inspiration! We just love that band, always have, always will. So, in no particular order five of our favorite Oi!/punk albums:

- The Ejected - A touch of class
- Hard Skin - Same meat different gravy

During the last years, the band was quite active. Name your favorite shows within the last 3 years?

We did quite a few gigs and they were all really cool so it is difficult to pick three favorites. That’s why we pick five, but in no particular order:

Hey James, hope you are fine in these fucked up times. The new E.P. is out April 11th, and you had planned a huge record release party in Melboure. But now, due COVID 19, everything is cancelled - how are you going to celebrate the release now?


James- Yeah! what a bummer! we had a big party at the Footscray Hotel planned on that date with a bunch of bands we like at the moment, our mate was gonna play some rock n roll vinyls all night, get everyone dancing. It would have been a great way to start gigging again... but you know, these things happen. There's a shitload of people out there who are completely fucked after this so it's hard to complain too much without being a bit of a dickhead. We'll be selling records in Melbourne through our bigcartel page (there's a link on our Facebook page) and we're gonna put up a video on that date too (April 11) it's of us playing at the pub we were gonna have the release at so if you're overseas you can kinda get the vibe of it all.

At the moment, Corona dominates our daily life. How does that Virus affect your life? You guys had planned a tour through Europe this summer - will you postpone that tour? How is the current situation regarding the tour? How do you deal with Corona & lockdown?


Yeah the tours off... for the moment, really wanna come over, would be good to get there next year, We have a couple of extra songs that we havent released that were saving to do a split with a European/English band so maybe we'll tour on that next year. It's kinda strange here, were all from New Zealand and our families and friends back home are all on complete lockdown, can't leave their house, cant visit each other, they're taking it really serious there. But here in Melbourne its kind of strange, most of us are all still working, venues pubs restaurants are all closed, but we all work in construction which seems to still be going for some reason. It's kind of a strange feeling driving to work and no one's on the roads, but its good to have cash still coming in... although I wouldn't mind a bloody sleep in! I get up at 530am to go to work while everyone chills out all day it sucks! haha

Dave- I built a bar table in my back shed, I stand on one side, serve myself a beer and run around the other side and sit on the stool and then drink the beer. It gets difficult when the bartender gets too chatty and I have to keep swapping sides to respond. Also, I got a bit too drunk in the last night and had to throw myself out.

It’s about 2 years between the release of your debut LP and the new E.P.. You guys were going through horrible times, as your bass player Kalem died after the recordings of "Painting In A Corner". Did you ever think about letting the band die as well?

Dave : Ah losing Kalem was pretty rough on us and many others. He was a rad dude and a good mate. We all miss him and always will. We gave it a lot of time before we had a jam together. Just waited until it felt right again. The song we wrote for him 'every now and then' on the new 7", it seemed like a fitting send-off for him. But yeah it was all a bit uncertain there for a bit.

Let me know what the listeners can expect from the new record. Did you change much in the recording process? Any new influences - like "let's play this song more like AC/DC" or "let's do this like GBH"?

James: We wrote half the songs with Kalem and half with Scotty so there kind of a new vibe I guess, not majorly though. I wanted to steer it in kind of a more pub rock n roll direction, like, we've got a bit of piano on one of the tracks, and there's a couple of guitar riffs here and there that have been inspired by stuff like Third World War and Ian Dury and the Blockheads and bands like that, but it's pretty subtle really, we're still finding our feet a bit when we try new stuff, a few people probably won't notice it too much. We are definitely sticking to the sort of music that was just at the very edge of punk starting in the early '70s, that hard rock n roll stuff (I actually made a playlist on Spotify called "pub rock n roll" by jamesmorgan_1987 if you wanna hear the kinda stuff were taking our inspiration from)

There's a lot of great bands coming out of Australia right now, not just Oi! related, even bands like AMYL AND THE SNIFFERS, PARKWAY DRIVE or THE CHATS sound fresh, are kinda successful and kick ass. Can you name your top 3 Australian bands right now and your top 3 of all time?


James: dunno about Parkway Drive but the others are cool haha. For nowadays stuff, there's actually a bit of a surge of rock n roll here. They're kinda poppy but I used to work with a guy who plays in a band called "Private Function" who are great, really crazy live act. There's also a glam band called "Smooch" that just started that are pretty good, and there's a band called "Punter" that are pretty good, early Aussie punk vibes

All time: The Angels, Coloured Balls, Daddy Cool (EAGLE ROCK!)

The Chats are quite funny though. Also I wonder if I wore a bikini on stage like Amy for the sniffers we might sell more records..? I do have very nice legs!

Whenever you'll come to Europe: What are the "things you want to see"? It could be everything like "I want to see the Eiffel-tower" to "I want to drink czech beer".

James: I actually used to live in Europe for a few years, I stayed in Lyon in France for about 6 months, and I lived in Italy for about the same amount of time, then in London for a few years. But that's kinda what I was excited for, to go to the Elephants Head in Camden or catch up with some old mates in Brixton or just see a bunch of shit I haven't seen in ages. Now that we can't leave the country I'm fuckin dying to get the fuck out and go see Europe again, it's such a fuckin cool place. Definitely keen for some German piss though, beer here is pretty rubbish, keen for a currywurst too!

Dave: Ah I just wana get back to those glorious German beer gardens with the giant pretzels and those humungous steins (starts drooling). Oh the senf and curry ketchup too, lecker lecker!

"Reason For My Sin" is your debut release on vinyl. Can you please introduce the band? As far as I know, the band started with a girl on vocals and you’ve already had recorded a demo with her. Why she left?

We are a 3 piece Oi! Band from Buffalo, NY. Members - Nick Terlecky (Vocals, Guitar), Mason Hutchins (Bass), and Eric Ellman (Drums). When I first started the band in 2018 it was more a hardcore/punk band with some Oi! Influence, and I asked our friend at the time to sing for it. That lineup did not work out and we didn’t see eye to eye, so we moved forwardas a 3 piece and I decided to make The Elite a full blown Oi! band with myself on vocals.

Why did you choose the name "The Elite" - as there are a couple of bands out there with the same name? Did you know about the scene "famous" band called “The Elite” from the 90s with members of Cock Sparrer and The Business?

I got the name from a line in one of my favorite songs “Attack” by Blitz. I was aware of the other Elite / I am also a massive Cock Sparrer and The Business fan but it just felt like a good fit at the time.

Actually the whole world is going insane about that Corona / COVID 19 situation. I hope you guys are alright? Does this situation affect you guys right now? Any shows or tours cancelled? Are you afraid of whats coming up regarding the virus?

Yes it affects us all personally and also as a band but trying to keep a positive outlook. We have a lot of badass things going on / in the works for The Elite, we are using this downtime productively.

I’m a landscaper, so luckily I still have work and a lot of shit to do / keep me busy. I am trying to get around to watching that Hunters show that came out recently, sounds right up my alley. My top 3 movies, Rambo: First Blood, Rocky, Inglourious Basterds.

The Elite play a great mix of Oi!, Punk & Hardcore. Let me know your top 3 records of each of that genres!

Stick To Your Guns, Freundschaft und Vertrauen - so macht Labelarbeit noch Spass. Doch das nur am Rande. Die Schweden haben ihre Waffen auf "Still Worth Fighting For" noch schärfer eingestellt als auf den Vorgängern : Grimmig-aggressiver Gesang trifft auf hochmelodische Arrangements, die vor allem durch den verstärkten Einsatz von Saxophon und Trompete glänzen. David von GATANS LAG und Linda von der Malmöer Ska Band THE BUSTUPS bringen mit ihren Instrumenten ein neues Element in den bewährten OLDFASHIONED IDEAS Alltag. Dazu setzt man auf einen weiblichen Background Chor, der immer wieder angenehm an die besten Songs von PERKELE aus der "Confront" Ära erinnert. Am Songwriting wurde ebenfalls gefeilt, mit Coste Eriksson (NASTY BOYS, LOWRIDERS, JET BLACK GASOLINE) hat man sich bei drei Songs sogar Unterstützung von außerhalb geholt. Dass OLDFASHIONED IDEAS hier ihr mit Abstand bestes und ausgereiftetes Album abliefern wird bereits nach dem ersten Hören klar. Bei jeden weiteren Durchlauf entdeckt man dann aber Song für Song einen neuen Favoriten. Abwechslungsreicher schwedischer Oi! Punk mit ordentlich Power und Herz, wir hoffen jetzt schon das auch Album Nummer 6 bei uns erscheint.

Das Debüt-Album von THE BRASS - nach einer überragenden EP und diversen digital und auf Tape erschienenen Demos - könnte gut als Blaupause für "American Oi!" der Gegenwart herhalten.
Ursprünglich in Kanada gegründet, nahm der THE BRASS Express über den Umweg New York Kurs auf Philadelphia, wo die Band mittlerweile beheimatet ist.
Bei dieser Odyssee hat man scheinbar die Grund-Essenzen dessen eingeatmet, wofür seinerzeit Bands wie die WRETCHED ONES oder ANTI HEROES und heute NO TIME oder PMS 84 stehen: Fieser, glücklicherweise nicht in Geschrei abdriftender Gesang, solide gestrickte Songstrukturen und eine ordentliche Schippe Wut und Hass. Die Scheibe ballert von vorne bis hinten, bei einem Song kommt sogar ein Saxophon zum Einsatz, welchen den versierten Hörer unweigerlich an die kultigen Franzosen Bands der 80er denken lässt. Woanders klingt die Band dann wieder schwer nach der ersten BISHOPS GREEN 12". Das ist abwechslungsreich, aber stets mit klarer eigener Note, inklusive einer schönen EDDIE AND THE HOT RODS Coverversion. Die Band arbeitet hart und ist im Herbst 2018 auch auf europäischen Bühnen zu sehen.

"War Of the Roses", so heißt das Debüt von ULTRA SECT aus der Bay Area um San Francisco. Die Band besteht aus Leuten von u.a. SUEDE RAZORS und HOUNDS & HARLOTS, will sagen, hier sind keine Rookies am Werk. Dem Sound der Erstgenannten kommen ULTRA SECT verdammt nahe. Vier schwere, breitbeinige Bootboy Hymnen walzen stampfend aus den Boxen und bauen sich breitbeinig vorm Hörer auf. Erfreulicherweise verkommt die Working Class Attitude nicht zu einer leeren Pose - nein - auch textlich kommt da etwas mehr als nur die blanke Phrasendrescherei. Die Einflüsse reichen vom leicht glam-lastigen Sound englischer Größen wie THE CRACK hin zu den flüssigen Melodien französischer 80er Jahre Bands wie WARRIOR KIDS, dies angereichert mit dem typischen amerikanischen US Oi! der Marke TEMPLARS oder SYDNEY DUCKS = ULTRA SECT.

Als wir mit STOMPER 98 über das Release einer neuen Platte sprachen ließen die Bandmitglieder bereits keinen Zweifel: "Wir hauen hier einen raus, das wird unsere beste Platte überhaupt, wir schauen stur geradeaus und feuern aus allen Rohren!". Als wir dann das Master von "Althergebracht" bekamen, war uns klar: Die Typen haben nicht zuviel versprochen. Das ist die beste STOMPER 98 Platte in 20 Jahren Bandgeschichte, und, auch wenn diese Vergleiche selbstredend immer sehr subjektiv ausfallen, eines der, wenn nicht sogar DAS beste deutsche Oi! Album der letzten 15 oder 20 Jahre. Schon beim ersten Ton wird klar: Eine Oi! Platte in bester "Böhse Menschen, Böhse Lieder" Tradition. Kein Platz für Deutschrock-Anleihen, kein "Raubein mit Herz" Gejammer, keine Entschuldigungs-Textbausteine, hier dominiert die pure Energie, Euphorie, hier ist Skinhead, hier ist STOMPER 98. Und zwar noch einen Tick kraftvoller als zu "Für die Ewigkeit" Zeiten. Die Gitarren liefern sich ein aggressives Melodienduell, das Schlagzeug und der Bass treiben ohne Ende, der Gesang ist fies, klar, mitreißend und das smart eingestreute Saxophon begleitet an genau den richtigen Stellen. Hier jagt wirklich ein Hit den anderen, Vergleiche erübrigen sich und liegen dennoch auf der Hand: ganz klar die 80er, ein wenig Franzosen Oi! und für das jüngere Publikum kann man gerne Namen wie LION'S LAW ins Spiel bringen, unterm Strich steht aber: Das ist die neue STOMPER 98.

Zuerst die ritualisierte Folklore: Danke für das tolle Jahr, vor allem für das Vertrauen was ihr uns immer entgegen bringt. 

Gerade wenn wir Bands an den Start bringen die oftmals noch als Insider-Tipps laufen oder die nur Wenige kennen, sind wir immer wieder überrascht wie gut die meisten der Bands dann doch ankommen. Auch 2018 werden wir unser Motto "No Time For Bad Music" weiterfahren und dabei sicher die eine oder andere "bekanntere" Band herausbringen, uns es aber nicht nehmen lassen Knall auf Fall auch diverse Newcomer die wir geil finden zu signen (was für ein hochtrabendes Wort). 

2017 haben wir unsere neue Website an den Start gebracht, ein Unterfangen dass uns monatelang beschäftigte und uns einige schlaflose Nächste bescherte. Außerdem wurde unsere Crew mit der bezaubernden Steffi verstärkt, die sich u.a. mit um den Versand kümmert. Irgendwann bekommt sie vielleicht auch mal eine eigene Contra-E-Mail-Adresse. 

2017 haben wir nicht weniger als 34 Releases gemacht, was komplett geisteskrank ist. Manchmal fragen wir uns wirklich ob wir nicht einen "Supervisor" brauchen der uns mal etwas bremst. Oft sind wir aber so begeistert und euphorisch, dass wir den Hawaii Urlaub und die Nutten streichen, uns keinen goldenen Wasserhahn kaufen sondern lieber die neue EP von einer befreundeten Band herausbringen. Voller Stolz können wir sagen: Was den Releaseplan 2017 angeht haben wir fast alles richtig gemacht. Eine Menge Killer, nur ganz wenige Filler, ein Spektrum von Hardcore, Oi!, Punk, Mod und dabei wirklich alles kein Schrott.

Zuletzt kamen Ende des Jahres noch die fantastischen E.P.'s von den MASTERLESS DOGS aus Kanada und den FACELESS OFFENDERS aus (soll geheim bleiben). Beides absolute Knaller, das erste Feedback zu den Scheiben ist überwältigend, da hat wohl der eine oder andere eine neue Lieblingsband gefunden. Wir feiern die beiden Scheiben übrigens selber auch total ab.

]]> Mon, 04 Dec 2017 10:47:40 +0000 <![CDATA[Telekoma - Die Wurzel Allen Übels ]]> https://www.contra-net.com/de/news/telekoma-die-wurzel-allen-uebels/ Im Februar 2009 düsten Pogoradio-Rüdi und ich über die damals noch kostenlose Mitfahrzentrale in die bayrische Hauptstadt, um dort das zweitägige Festival Vorsicht die Ossis mitzumachen. Insgesamt war das ein richtig großartiges Wochenende, seitdem ich die zwei Contra-Records-Nasen Hechti und Ecke in mein Herz geschlossen habe. Doch nicht nur die, sondern auch Telekoma, die dort auftraten und mir bis dahin unbekannt waren. Etwas dunkel erinnern kann ich mich noch, dass ich den zweiten Abend hauptsächlich mit Drummer Micha rumhing und relativ zum Schluss Sänger Ben an der Theke kennenlernte, wo er mir diverse Schnäpse aus den Rippen leierte, bis wir rausgekehrt wurden. Im Nachhinein war ich von den beiden Alben Wirrwahr und Anfang oder Ende richtig angefixt. Von diesem trockenen, derben, nach staubigen Beton klingenden Sound, mit verzerrt, relativ hoch gestimmter und sägender Gitarre und dieser zum Mittelfinger geformten Stimmbänder an einer vor Wut, Hass und Zorn geschwollener Zunge, wollte ich einfach ständig mehr. Soviel, dass ich bei der Band anfragte, ob sie nicht ein Konzert in Mannheim spielen wollen, dass ich veranstalten würde. Über die Absage war ich zuerst überrascht, konnte sie dann aber verstehen und finde sie damals wie heute einfach großartig: Is' zu weit, kein Bock das ganze Wochenende auf der Autobahn zu verbringen. Der einfache Weg beträgt knapp 700 km … Heute kennt man sich, trifft sich mindestens einmal im Jahr auf dem besten Punkfestival Back To Future in Glaubitz zum Punkrock Wellness und freut sich dann auch mal gemeinsam über eine Band – dieses Jahr Es war Mord. Außergewöhnlich, doch umso schöner ist der dieses Jahr zweite Kontakt mit der Band in einem Jahr: Das neue Album Die Wurzel Allen Übels. Das brettert gleich mit zwei Deutschpunk-Granaten los, die sicher richtige Live-Hymnen werden. Denn Das Paradies wirft Schatten und Kein Herr, Kein Knecht haben Refrains, die zum Mitsingen zwingen, wenn man auch nur noch einen Funken Wut im Wanst hat. Doch auch darüber hinaus hält die Band was sie verspricht, auch wenn das letzte Album schon vor zehn Jahren erschienen ist. Sicher, das Tempo wird nicht mehr so kompromisslos durchgezogen und es gibt auch leisere Töne, dennoch merkt man dem Album in jeder Vinylrille die Intensität an, mit der sie eingraviert wurde. Die Wurzel allen Übels ist ein mächtiger Wurf an neuen Liedern für Telekoma, der beweist, dass sie als Band gereift, aber trotzdem nicht verweichlicht sind, sondern ihren Zorn gegen die Bürgerlichkeit beibehalten haben.
